Kumbakonam Based Sivasthalangal and Divya Desams - Part 1

Kumbakonam - the name  immediately brings memories of beautiful temples,Chozha empire and Degree coffee.
Its  my dream to visit all if not most of the temples in and around Kumbakonam, write a blog about it which will be useful for people who want to visit temples around Kumbakonam.Kumbakonam is not a town and it is not a city as well. Its somewhere in between. The place is well maintained, clean and Tamil culture is vibrant and written all over Kumbakonam..Every street ends or begins with a temple and most of the roads lead to the Maha maham lake.
In this first blog I would like to write about few temples around Kumbakonam which are present in Kumbakonam to Tanjore route. After visiting Thirunallar along with my parents we reached Kumbakonam at around 1.30 pm and we relaxed with a sumptuous lunch at a hotel called Rayas. The hotel was great and had great room service. At around 3.30 pm we started towards a place called Patteswaram.

Patteswaram:

From Kumbonam take the Tanjore route. After a 3 km travel take a left cut and few meters later a right cut and then a straight road. This road will pass through Darasuram and  another 3 kms drive will bring us to this nice temple.
My parents standing between two beautifully carved out Lions

The temple was not crowded and it was not haunted as well. After entering the huge Raja gopuram one has to walk through another 50-70 meters to see the glimpse of Shiva. The most striking aspect of this sacred place and also the most unique feature is about Nandhikeswarar. He is not sitting straight towards shiva .He has stepped aside so that Shiva is visible. There must be a reason and the legends of this temple begins here.Thirugnanasambandar visited this place in a hot summer with his entourage. To surprise and make Sambandar comfortable lord himself made Muthupandal when he started walking towards the temple.Shiva also ordered Nandhi to step aside so that Shiva can see Sambandar easily and viceversa. My father asked me name other temples were Nandhi does not look towards Shiva and I answered immediately.Thirupungur,Thirupoonduruthi and now Patteswaram.I had seen all 3, courtesy my Father and Shiva. We had a nice darshan of Dhennupuriswarar and I was thinking why this name is called Patteswaram.Another legend starts now.Parashakthi visited this calm place and did meditation here. She was helped by a small cow called Patti.Shiva appeared before Parashakthi and granted her wish. The cute little cow made a small lingam and started worshiping Shiva.Shiva thrilled by Patti's love and affection appeared in front of him and blessed him.Hence the name Patteswaram.
 Nandhikeshwarar not looking directly

One will come across two goddesses here Gnanambikai and Vishnu durgai.Vishnu durgai is famous here and most of the devotees come to worship this Devi as she is supposed to shower blessings and grant their wishes.
The Durga here is very soft in look and grace (Shanta Swarupi). Sitting on her vehicle Lion, placing the feet on the head of Demon Mahishasura, the Goddess appears in a Tribanga stature, eight hands, three eyes and jewels in the ears. Generally, the Lion carrying Kali would be looking on the right side. But the Shanta Swarupi Durga’s Lion here faces the left side. In her hands, the mother holds, conch, wheel, bow, arrow, sword, shield and a parrot.
Chozhas before going to war or before taking an important decision worship Vishnu durgai.Even Ramar worshiped durgai and embarked on the war against Ravana.
Another importance of this place is Viswamtirar was conferred Brahmarishi by Vasistar at this holy place. After Patteswaram our next stop was  next street,Sakthimutham.

Sakthimutham:

This is a romantic place. When I was searching the legend of this temple  I understood an important fact that love and romance transcends even to the almighty. Lord  here is called as Sivakozhunthewarar and when you find the reason for this a wry smile automatically comes.Parvathi was worshiping Shiva at this place and Shiva manifested himself as columns of fire called as Jyotiswaroopam.Interestingly Lakshmi was standing in one leg and was doing penance and when she saw the column of fire she hugged Shiva with the other leg and kissed him.Hence the name Sakthi mutham and the Shiva is called as Shivakozhuntheswarar.
Parvathi embracing Shiva

There is a nice Vinayaga by name Vallabha Vinayagar and this place is significant for unmarried people.Thirunavukarasar had sung hymns praising god here and he was instructed by Shiva to visit Nallur.
Rajagopuram of Sakthimutham

When I saw my father explaining to my mother about the legend I did see sparkles of romance in my father's  eyes.

Nathan Perumal temple:

Exactly 4 kms drive from here will take you to Nadhan Perumal temple. When we went it was around 4.30 pm and school children were cycling happily towards their respective homes.
A small road ends at this nice temple and there was no one except Perumal,Aiyengar and ourselves.
This place is called as Nandhipuravinnagaram.Nandhi is usually associated with Shiva, why this association with  Perumal was the immediate curiuosity?Iyengar had all the answers.Nandhi wanted to see Perumal and visited Vinnagaram, rather heaven. He was stopped at the entrance by Dwaraplakars.Nandhi tried to force himself and Dwaraplakar  cursed him.To absolve his sin Shiva instructed him to go to Shenbagaaranyam and worship Perumal.Nandhi absolved his sin by doing the same. Our next doubt is what is this Shenbagaranyam. This place was previously called as Shenbagararanyam as it was full of Shenbaga flowers. Now it is called as Nandhipuravinnagaram or Nadhan koil.
Nathan perumal Temple

Another striking feature of this temple is Perumal is facing west. There are two stories for this and both are interesting to read.Sibi chakravarthy was a righteous king. Darmaraja and Indran decided to test his righteousness.Indran converted himself into a pigeon and the pigeon was chased by Darmaraja who was in the form of eagle.Pigeon sought Sibi's help for its protection and Sibi accepted. The eagle said it was hungry and it is its right to eat the pigeon.Sibi was in a dilemma now as he had to protect the pigeon and he also had to satisfy the wish of the eagle.Sibi offered his own flesh to satisfy eagle's hunger.Darmaraja and Indran were pleased at Sibi's honesty and blessed him.To witness this event Perumal had changed his position towards west. The other story is now Vishnu's romance.Lakshmi and Vishnu had a small fight and both of them got separated.Lakshmi came to this place and did penance worshiping Vishnu.Vishnu was looking towards left and now he had to turn to his right or west to pacify Lakshmi and take her back.
Three of us infront of the temple

So this place is supposed to resolve marital discord.
This temple is one of the 108 divyadesams and the temple resembles Puri Jaganathaa temple. It was built by Nandhivarmachozhan.Mollavar is in sitting posture and is called as Srinivasan and whenever I see Srinivasan positive energy invariably surrounds  and enters me.

Keezhapazhyarai:

One km drive from Nathan temple brings you to this place. This place is ensconced in history. The very word Pazhyarai brings back the memories of Ponniyun selvan, Kalki and that princess Kundavai. When I had mapped this place and told my parents that we will be visiting Pazhayarai my father was very happy. He was reading Balakumaran's Udayar where this place is center of attraction..I was trying to get info about this place and I'm just writing what was gathered.Pazhayarai was initially an important place during Pallava period. It was subsequently conquered by Chozas and Vijayalaya chozhan had built a palace here. Nandhivarma pallavan 3 again conquered this town only to lose again to Chozhas. Kundavai, the great princess  influenced many of Chozha kings decisions lived here. Rajarajan,Rajendran lived here and Rajarajan's son made this place his capital.Uthamachozhan who was fond of building temples built  many temples around this place.
Desolate, but pazhayarai is an architectural wonder

In fact this place contains 4 thallis where Chozhas had stationed their warriors.
Pazhyarai temple was probabaly built both by Pallavas and subsequently renovated by Chozhas.
This place of great culture and heritage was demolished by Sundara pandiyan. The Chozha palace is not present now and the temple is in a dilapidated state and is being renovated.
This place has hence seen Pallavas,Chozhas and then Pandiyas. All three great kings of our Tamil culture  have walked here. When I strolled with my parents I did pinch myself.

This temple is a mixture of Pallava and Chozha architecture

The temple was  closed and it is closed most of the time.An old lady was taking bath in a pipe outside and she told me "thambi antha vitula savi iruku vangi paru".I looked the other side of the road an elderly helpful man shouted and asked a person to open the temple for us.The entrance of the temple looks similar to Thiruvellarai and Thirupanjali temple and I presume is of Pallava architecture. The temple is Madakoil and probably built by Kochenguto chozhan. The Somanathar is installed in a chariot based structure(Karakoil) and it has beautiful sculptures. We spent almost half an hour inside the small temple which is in a dilapidated state.A chozha pride probably a symbol of tamil culture is being renovated now. When I came out of the temple I was thinking about Jatavarman Sundarapandian, who had destroyed this place and palace. He must have had some justification. The fall of Pazhayarai marked the fall of Chozha dynasty.

Haridwaramangalam:

From, Pazyarai one has take a right and drive through a small straight road. The road is in a drivable condition and after a travel of 5 kms one has to cross a small bridge and turn to the right.3 kms later a left cut marked by an arch will be present. One has to drive for around 10 Kms to reach this place called Haridwaramangalam. The place was very calm and had a beautiful pond in front of it.The temple has two entrances and there was no aiyer when we went to the temple. We were there at around 6pm.
This place answers two questions. Why Brahma has no separate shrine and Why Thazhampoo does not take part in the decoration or in the rituals done for god?
Brahma and Vishnu had a ego clash to establish their superiority. If Brahma was able to see or touch the head of Siva he wins and if Vishnu is able to see the feet of Siva, Vishnu wins.
Entrance of Haridwaramangalam

Brahma with help of swan went upwards to see Shiva's head but was unable to do so.At that time Thazampoo was falling down which was adorned by Shiva.Brahma asked thazampoo to tell Shiva that he saw the head of Shiva and the flower accepted.Meanwhile Vishnu made a pit in the ground and went down to see the feet of Shiva. He was unable to reach and he came back accepting his defeat. When Brahma said he had seen Shiva's head Shiva admonished Brahma and the flower for faking a story. He cursed Brahma not to have a shrine in the world and also made sure Thazhampoo did not take part in any ritual done to Hindu Gods.
The pit dug by Vishnu is still present here.Hence the name Hari-Vishnu,Dwara-Pit,Mangalam.
This temple is one of the Pancha aranya sthalams, meaning Shiva temples present in five different forests.
The Shiva here is called as Pathalaeshwarar.

 Avalivanallur:

3 kms from this place is another Shiva temple, a Padal petra sthalam called Avalivanallur. This is also a  Pancha aranya sthalam. The forest here is Pathiri vanam - Trumpet flowers.
Shiva here is called as Sakshi nathar and the place is Avalivanallur. Both put together forms the legend of this place.
Father and mother resting at Avalivanallur temple
A Shiva devotee after his Kasi trip came back to his village. He saw two women one in the bed, sick due to chicken pox and the other one nursing her.He thought the person who was sitting as his wife who actually was his wife's sister. The Shiva devotee went to the pond to take bath and had the intention to have conjugal ties with his wife after bath..Shiva appeared in front of him and informed him the truth. As god himself came as witness this place is called as Sakshianathar and the place is called as Aval ival alla nallur.(She is not the one you thought).

Avoor:

From this place Avoor is exactly9 kms.Shiva here is called as Paspatheswarar because Pasu- Cow- Kamadhenu worshiped Shiva here.
This place is also special because there are two goddesses for Shiva here.Pankajavallai and Mankalmibigai are the two goddesses here and Mankalimbigai idol was found in the pond adjacent to the temple.
Panchabairavar

Kalabhairavar is famous because he has 5 different presentations beautifully depicted on the wall.Traditional Bhairava Temple is in Thiruvisalur and Ammachatiram near Kumbakonam. Pancha(5)Bhairava Temple is in Avoor near Kumbakonam and in the Sattanathar Temple, Sirkazhi.
Avoor Kizhar and Moolankizhar are 2 sanga kala(old tamil period) poets born from this place.Perunthalai Sathanar was also born at this place.
Vayu(air)had a fight with Adhiseshan(snake god)and he came with two small hill from Kailash which fell at Nallur and Avoor.
This is also a Madakoil.
When we wound up seeing the temple we were exhausted physically. We drove back to Hotel Rayas and had great food.We dozed of with a spiritual feel.

Nallur:

Next day we had a nice Kumbakonam degree coffee and started towards Nallur. We hit the Tanjore road and after around 10kms there is a railway crossing on the left side. One has to take that left and go towards Nallur.Another left cut will take us to this unbelievable, but deserted temple.
When we entered the temple there were no one except a handicapped person who guided us upstairs. It is also a Mada koil and my parents had the energy and will to climb up around 20steps.
Shiva here is called as Panchavarneswarar.
Nicely chiseled out Vinayaga next to my mother

The legend of the temple is beautifully depicted on the walls of the temple.Shivalingam transforms itself into 5 different colours over a period of 24 hours. Copper, pink, golden, emerald green and one that could not be named or recognized are the 5 different colours. We saw Him in copper colour.
Usually in Shiva temple there is no Pada darisanam(Getting blessings from the feet of god) which is quite common in Vishnu temples. But in this temple this darshan is practiced as in Vaishnava style as Thirunavukarasar was given pada(foot)darshan at this holy place.
Nice view from the temple

Another legend associated with this temple is with Kundhi devi. Kundhidevi had 5 children courtesy 5 husbands.Because of this she had a dosha??.Her rectification was to bathe in seven oceans. She was unable to do this and asked Naradha's help.Naradha filled up the pond at Nallur with water brought from seven oceans. She took bath in the pond and got detoxified.
Amarneethi Nayanar and his family

Read the story
When you see this piece of painting, some background for it or some story should be there.Another story and another game by our great Shiva.Amarneethinayanar was born at Nallur and he is a great Shiva devotee with unflinching loyalty.Once he had a guest, a Saivite at home.He wanted to have food and nayanar welcomed him.The saivite had two dhoti's.He gave one to the Nayanar and asked him to keep it safe which he will use after taking bath. After taking bath he came to the house and asked for the cloth.Nayanar was bemused as he could not find the cloth. He gave him a duplicate but the Saivite did not accept. He told him that he can use a weighing machine which will yield a cloth equivalent to his garment weight. He kept the drenched garment on one side and asked Nayanar to keep the cloth in the opposite side.Nayanar kept the duplicate garment on the other side and it did not measure up to the weight of  Saivite's garment. The Saivite told him he can keep even the utensils or ornaments he had.Nothing measured to the weight of the Saivite's garment. Finally Amarneethi nayanar and his entire family sat on one side.
Saivite was Shiva and after all Shiva had just started his game.He showed himelf and told Amarneethi nayanar, "your services are now required at Kailash, your entire family come with me".
The family of Amarneethi nayanar as statues are seen in the temple.
There is a nice Kalliamman also in the temple.
Rajagopuram of Nallur temple

Thirupalathurai:

Retrace your path and hit the Tanjore road again.7 kms drive will bring you to this temple.
As soon as you enter the temple you will see this.
Nayakars Granary

This is a Granary (storehouse of paddy) which measures 86 feet (26 m) in width and has a height of 36 feet (11 m) with a capacity of 3,000 kalam. The Nayaks  constructed it between 1600–1634 AD . The State Archaeological Department has declared it as a monument.
The temple has a short legend only.
Rajagopuram of Thirupalathurai Temple

Tharuka a great sage became angry against Shiva and sent a tiger to attack him.Shiva tore the tiger and skinned out the tiger and used it as his garment. This has been sung by Appar.
The temple was built initially by Chozhas and subsequently renovated by Nayakars.
500 metres from this place on the left side of the road there is a temple called 108 Sivalayam. There are 108 Shivalingams placed in rows a awe inspiring sight. These lingams here was supposed to be installed by Ramar himself  to clear the sin he had acquired after killing Ravana who is a Shiva devotee.Don't forget to see another huge lingam present adjacent to the temple which is supposedly installed by Hanuman.
108 lingams in rows

One who worships at this temple will be absolved of  all sins.

Thirukarukavur:

This temple is just 8kms from Papanasam. An enitre web page is devoted for this temple.
 garbaratchambigaitemple.org/howtoreach.php
I have nothing to add.

 ChakkaraVaagaeswarar-Iyampettai:

The temple was closed by the time we reached and it was just 10.30 am.
Sivachariar's number is written on the outside wall.I called him but he was unable to come.
The most striking aspect of the temple is its situated in a posh Muslim locality.
Think of a Shiva temple surrounded by Muslim brethrens and mosques.
That is our culture,we should be proud.
No entry in front of Chakkaravageshwarar

The legend of the temple is also a one liner - Vishnu got his Chakram-Discus,from Shiva and hence Shiva here is called as Chakkaravageshwarar.

Thittai :

Our next stop was Pasupathikoil which was locked as well.Once again we hit the Tanjore road.
A few kms later a left cut will take us to this temple.8km drive from this point will take up to this holy shrine.
A shrine gains importance because of the God or the presiding deity. But this place itself is very important and a mere visit to this place even without visiting the shrine is considered holy. There are two thittais (meaning a elevated place). One is Seerkazhi and the other is Thittai.Seerkazhi is called as vada(north)Thittai while this place is called as then kudi(south)thittai.Once this place was devastated by flood and God created an elevated place where people could gather and be safe.Hence this place attained this name.
From the top of the temple
Thirugnanasambandar calls the God here as Pasupathi nathar, meaning "Athmanathan".Pasu means not cow but "Athma - Soul".At this place one can understand one's self and hence the name Athmanathan.
Another interesting aspect of this temple is Dakshinamurthy has a separate shrine and hence this temple is also a Guru sthalam.Students throng for Guru's(Dakshinamurthy - Jupiter)blessings for examination purposes. The temple is frequented by lot of people.
Rajagopuram of Thittai being renovated

Over the top of the lingam every 24 minutes a drop of water falls through a small hole found between two stones. These 2 stones are called Suryaganthakal and Chandraganthakal, meaning magnetic stones of sun and moon. They absorb water from atmosphere and the absorbed water is transformed into a droplet which falls on the lingam.Ask the priest to show the hole.
The temple is beautiful and well maintained and don't forget to climb up the temple from the outer pragaram on the left side. The view from the top is magnificent. It was hot as well as breezy on top  and I did feel close to the god.
Thittai is divine.
All these temples are open from 7am till 12.30 pm and from 4-8pm,except Iyyampettai and Pasupathi koil which should be seen before 10 am or after 5 pm

It was indeed a great spiritual jouney.I was happy on two counts.First for seeing these temples which are not just god residing places. They depict tamil culture and architecture.Chozhas and Pallavars have played great service in building the temples which had multiple utilities,a safe place during floods,a place of worship and during war people used to go to the temples for safety.
My parents with me and being a driver as well as guide for them was like doing service for God.
A double Dhamaka.
I plan to visit all the temples in and around Kumbakonam in the near future and if God permits will pen down as well.

Karaikal based Sivasthalangal

Every one is aware of Thirunallar and Karaikal Ammaiyar temple at Karaikal. Interestingly there are 3 more Padal petra temples at Karaikal other than Thirunallar. Including Thirunallar there are 4 Shiva temples which have been visited by Saiva Kuravargal.
It was a friday and along with my parents we started our trip towards Karaikal and Kumbakonam.
From the inside of the temple

Thiruvettakudi:

In this blog I shall write about Karaikal based Siva temples. As I'm a Pondicherian and Karaikal is a part of Pondicherry I'm in fact proud to write this.We reached the outskirts of Karaikal at around 9 am and weather was pleasant neither hot nor cold. After entering Karaikal proceed towards the bus stand which is a straight road and after around 4 km a left cut will take us to this place called Thiruvettakudi. There is a arch welcoming you to this road and it is hard to miss.A 2 km drive will take us to this lovely temple which is on the left side of the road. Thirugnana Sambandar has sung hymns praising the lord here.
The legend of the temple has a connection with Ramayana. Arjunan to win the war against Duryodana  had to acquire Pasupatha Enthiram. To  get this Enthiram he did penance at this place as directed by Priest Vyasar. Duryodana sent a demon in the form of pig to disturb Arjunan.Arjuna killed the Pig.
At that time Shiva along with Muruga came in the form of a hunter and claimed the pig.Arjunan started a heated coversation with Shiva. After teasing Arjunan for a while Shiva showed his true self and granted him the Pasupatha Enthiram.
The god here is called as Sundareshwarar and the temple opens by 6am itself.
As god came here as hunter(vedan) the place is called as Vettakudi.
Another legend associated with this temple is a fight broke between Siva and Sakthi about the superiority between them and Shiva cursed her to be born as a fisherwoman. Parvathi was born at this place as fisher woman and subsequently got united with Shiva.
The temple is very calm and  serene. It had lots of positive vibrations. My mother was very happy to see the temple.
       Entrance of Thiruvettakudi

After seeing the temple our next stop was Kovilpathu or Thiuthalicherry.

Rajogopuram of Thiruthellicherry
Thiruthellichery:

This place is in the heart of Karaikal. As one enters Karaikal town, there is a signal from where a left cut will take you to the bus stand.Take a right cut instead and  another immediate right cut will take you to this temple.Right opposite to Sivan there is a nice Peumal temple.
Siva here is called Parvatheeswarar and he is facing west which is a peculiar feature of this temple.Hence when we circumambulate we will see durgai to the left and dakshinamurthy on the right side.
I found lots of interesting facts about this place.
First the name of the place,Thiruthallicherry.
Break the name into three words,Thiru - theli - cherry.Thiru means Siva, Theli means sowing seeds and chery is nothing but place.
Once there happened to be a great drought in this place and Shiva himself came to sow seeds at this place, and hence the name - Thiru theli cherry.

Why Kovilpathu? I actually did not understand the name  and asked the priest. He explained to me nicely.Sambandar after seeing and singing at Thirunallar came to this place but did not come to this temple.Vinayagar called him to visit the temple. As calling somebody in Tamil is called Koovuthal, this place was called as Koovi Azhaitha Vinayagar, which over a period of time got changed to Kovil pathu.
Shiva here is called as Rajalingam,Baskara lingam.
As Chola king Ambarish was blessed with child after praying here the lingam is called as Rajalingam.(King-Raja).
Sun or suryan worshipped Shiva and hence he is called as Baskara  lingam.(Baskaran - Suryan).
Stories about this place does not end here.
Gnanasambandar had  a great argument with Jain priests at this place. When he was blocked from entering this place Shiva ordered a thunder to fall on Jain priests.Despite this they did not accept the defeat and called Sambandar for a debate on Saivism and Jainism.Sambandar won the debate.Jain priests accepted their defeat and embraced Saivism.
My parents standing in front of the temple, for me they are Siva and Parvathi.

Interesting legends and  history.

Dharmapuram:

Next we have to take the Thirunallar road and as we near Thirunallar a left turn will take us to this temple. It is a very narrow road and another two km drive will take us to this temple.
Shiva here is called as Yaazhmurinathar and the name, is the story of the temple.
Neelakanda Yaazhpanar usually accompanies Sambandar to give music to his hymns.Yaazhpanar over a period of time developed ego that he can give music to any song and as usual Shiva scented the fault and wanted to teach him a lesson.
When Sambandar started singing hymns at this place Yaazhpanar could not compose music with his Yaazh..Frustrated he wanted to break the music instrument. At that time Shiva  got the yaazh from Neelakandar and composed the music. He also danced to the tune.
Hence the name Yaazhmuri nathar.
A place for music lovers.
When we went to this temple the temple was under renovation and there were no one in the temple except for Shivalingam.
After seeing and spending some time at this temple I understood the meaning of tranquility.

Thirunallar:

Elephant standing in front of Thirunallar Temple

Another two km drive will take you to Thirunallar.Every one knows about Thirunallar.
I would like to talk about an interesting feature of this temple which many of us may not know.
After seeing Dharbaneshwarar to the right there is Thyagarajar.
He has an excellent story behind him.
When Indran decided to wage war against Asuras he wanted the help of Musugandha Chakravarthy a great Shiva follower.Musuggundhan helped Indran to crush Asuras.Indran asked him what Musugundhan wanted for his help.He asked for the lingam(Thyagarajamurthi) he and his wife used to worship.Indran wife dis not want to part the Lingam. To trick Musugundhan she made seven Lingams similar to the one he asked and requested him to select a Lingam.Shiva showed Musukunda chakravarthy the correct lingam.Indran's wife was impressed about his Shiva Bhakthi and gave all the Lingams to him.He came to his place and installed these Lingams at seven places and these places are called as Saptha Vidanga Sthlangal. We reached the place at 12pm and the Maragadha lingam was taken at around 12.15pm from the safe lock and Abhisekam was performed for the lingam. We were thrilled at what we saw.
Usually, it is the top portion of the lingam ,the ellipse which is believed to be Swayambhu(came on its own). The base – Avudayar- is made by hand. In all these seven lingams, the whole lingam including the base is of  a single piece, and are believed to have appeared just the same way, without being made. All the seven lingams are of different sizes, though they are made of the same material  maragatham  or emerald. The biggest one is at Thirunallar.Thiyagarajar here is called as NagaVidangar.
I had visited Thirunallar and people flock at Saniswaran but I don't know how many of us know about this aspect of Thirunallar.
I subsequently travelled to all the Saptha vidanga sthalangal about which there are already blogs written.
After seeing the temple including Saniswaran we started towards Kumbakonam.
Today happens to be Mahashivarathiri and I'm happy I could write about 4 siva temples of great historical importance.

Virudhachalam based Sivasthalangal

 Virudhachalam:

After reading about Siva temples which are considered equivalent to Kasi, I decided to see these temples.I zeroed on Virudhachalam .I googled for temples around Virudhachalam and  ended up getting a Potpouuri of Siva temples around Virudachalam.

It was a pleasant Sunday morning and I left Pondicherry by around 6 am and crossed Cuddalore by 6.45 am. You have to take Chidambaram road and after travelling around 5kms a right cut with a sign board directing to Virudhachalam is well visualised. After a rugged road for 5kms the state highway then transforms into a nice road and a pleasant ride of  55kms will take us to Virudhagireswarar. The temple  construction has been in two phases and it is a fascinating story.

Kuberan's daughter while flaunting her array of jewels dropped a erring. The erring was very important for her as she had sentimental attachment to it.The erring was picked by a naughty bird and dropped it on the lap of Vibashista Munivar. The Munivar unaware of the windfall coming his way kept the erring in a safe box.

Kuberan's daughter was peeved at the loss of the erring and she decided to trade  her entire jewellery to get back the erring. On hearing this the Munivar gave the erring  and got the jewellery from Kuberan's daughter. The Munivar sold the jewellery and with the money he got from the jewels he built the temple. This has happened in 7th century. The outer pragarams was built by Sembian Madevi,  a Chozha Princess of 10th century.

The temple is in the banks of river Manimutharu. The river and the temple has an interesting association with the life of Sundarar. Sundarar got 12,000 gold coins from Shiva after  singing songs praising Shiva. When sundarar wanted to take these coins to Thiruvarur, Shiva instructed him to drop the coins in the river. The tide took the coins to Thiruvarur which Sundarar collected from a tank called Kamalayam.

This temple is also called  as Thirumudukundram or Pazha malai. It just means a grand old mountain.

When Brahma wanted to create hills and mountains in the earth, Pazhamalai was omnipresent covering the entire earth. At Brahma's request Shiva made the mountain submerge under the river with only the top being visible. The hill itself is the manifestation of Sivan.

Legends of this temple does not end here, the Vinayagar here is called as Mattru Uraitha Vinayagar and he got the name because he checked the purity of the gold coins Sundarar got from Shiva.

This temple is supposed to be equivalent to Kasi because people who breathe their last here are blessed with god and goddess chanting the Shivaya Nama in the ears of the deceased.

The temple is quiet, beautiful, well maintained and well attended.

From the inside of the temple.
A serene view of the Gopuram

Pennadam:

Kalikamba Nayanar is a great Saivite. He used to feed Siva bhakthas after washing their feet. His wife used to pour water and Kalikambar used to wash the feet of the Shiva bhakthas.Once a servant who used to work for Kalikambar came in the guise of Shiva bhaktha and sought food.Kalikambar's wife recognised the person and hesitated in pouring water. Kalikambar got angry and severed  his wife' s hand. From here there are two versions. One version says that the servant was Shiva who burnt all of them and took them with him and another version is Shiva appeared and gave the hands to his wife.He then told them that there should be no caste in this world and no discrimination between rich and poor.Every one who embraces Shaivism and becomes a disciple of Shiva are considered equals.

The temple is very peculiar in two aspects. The wall surrounding the sanctum has windows through which the god can be seen from outside.

Nandhi looks in the opposite direction and it does not look towards Shiva and there is an interesting story behind this. We all know Shiva's fury and once in his anger destroyed the entire world with flood.

The entire world was submerged in water except Pennadam.Devas came to this place and asked Shiva to protect them and people from the flood.Lord's fury came down and he instructed the Nandhi to turn in the opposite direction to protect the place.Nandhi turned to the opposite side and diverted the flood from entering the place.Hence Shiva here is called as Pralaya Kaleswarar – Lord who protected the world.  He destroyed as well as  protected.
Stories behind this place does not end here. There is another interesting story -Why this place is called Pennadam?

Indira has the habit of worshiping Shiva with lots of flowers and one day he could not find enough flowers to do the puja.He sent two beautiful women,Devathais to Pennadam to collect flowers. The Devathais found beautiful Lingam at this place and they stayed back doing poojas for the Lingam.Indiran was worried and now  sent Kamadhenu(cow) to find out the Devathais. Kamadhenu found the girls but it got fascinated by the beautiful lingam and started to give its milk to the puja of Shiva.

Indiran after waiting for a while sent his elephant to fetch the Deva Kannigais and Kamadenu. The elephant after seeing the  pooja protected the lingam from the sun by covering the lingam between the four legs. Finally Indiran himself came down in search of the missing and when he saw what's happening he also joined the Seva.Shiva blessed all of them.Hence the name Pennadam.

I just mutered, amusing stories and a must see temple for Hindus.

To reach Pennadam one has start from Virudhachalam and proceed towards Thitagudi road.It is 19 kms from Virudhachalam.

Thirunelvayalarathurai:

To reach Thirunelvayalarathurai, proceed towards Thitakudi road from Pennadam and after 10 kms there will be a small left cut and a drive of another 4kms will bring you to this small village called Thirunelvayalarathurai.

A small temple which has been recently renovated.

This temple is associated with Sambandar. Sambandar while visiting temples near Cauvery river became very hungry. He was provided food by goddess and hence she bears the name Anna (food)purani. While eating Sambandar had hiccoughs and Shiva made a pond from where he can drink water so that his hiccoughs as well as thirst will be quenched.
Sambandar was a child and  used to walk by foot to see all the Shiva temples.Shiva and Parvathi could not stand Sambandar walking and they came in the dream of a rich landlord and asked him to donate a Palanquin(seevigai)for Sambandar. The same dream came for Sambandar also.Next day morning the richman got blessings from Sambandar and gave the Pallaku(Palanquin) to Sambandar.

These are two true associations between Sambandar, Shiva and this place.

When I finished seeing this place I could not help feeling jealous of Sambandar. As I entered the car this feeling of jealousness also opened my mind to a new vista.
Difference between Sambandar and ordinary people like me.
Sambandar would have never had those silly thoughts like jealousy. That is why he was near god or god personified.

Rajendirapattinam or Erukathampuliyur:

After travelling back in the same road for another 5 kms via Karuvapillaikuruchi, you have to hit the route which takes to Srimushnam.A 6 km drive will take you to this desolated temple. The ambience was serene. There were no one near and around the temple. The temple was closed and there was a huge pond in front of the temple.A small boy was taking bath and I asked him about the priest. He told me that the priest lives in the house which was  few meters distance from the temple. It was a small hut and staying outside I asked for the priest. His wife came out and told that the priest had gone to Virudhachallam. She was kind enough to send his 12 year old son who was playing cricket to open the temple.Nice mother and nice son.

Why this place has got two names, Erukathampuliyur and Rajendirapattinam?

Erkku means trees which have no utility value.Once great sages camouflaged as beautiful birds and trees came to this place to worship Shiva.Hunters tried to arrow down the birds and cut the trees. The sages became angry and converted them to Errukku trees so that they are not useful for anyone.

This place is called as Rajendirapaatinam because Raja raja chozhan prayed at this place for the birth of a child and he was blessed by the birth of Rajendrachozhan. Hence this place is also called as Rajendirapattinam. At present this name is well known rather than Erukathampuliur.

Another important story associated with this place is about our angry Murugan. He never stops fighting with his father.Once Shiva admonished Parvathi for not listening with concentration when he was taking class on Vedas. He sent her to earth and cursed her to be born as human being in Bharathava community. Murugan got angry tore the Vedas and picked up a fight with Shiva.Shiva sent him packing to earth and cursed him to be born as as dumb person.Murugan grew up dumb and started visiting Sivasthalangal and when he reached this place he got his speech.

Siva  here was worshipped by his own son and Shiva here is called as Thirukumara Sami.

It  is one of the five Puliyur temples. They are Chidambaram, Perumpuliyur, Omamapuliyur,Thirupathipuliur and Thiruerukathampuliur.

Vyagapradar has worshipped in these 5 places. He is a saint with feet and hands made of tiger's claws. The tamil name of tiger is puli and hence these five places end with the name  Puliur.

This place is also the birth place of Thiruneelakandayazhpannar. He used to accompany Sambandar and play Yaazh while Sambandar sang praising the lord with hymns.

There is a small shrine for him also.I was alone in the temple. Temple was small, had lots of shrubs and weeds which needs to be cleaned.I sat in front of Shiva for few minutes and asked him sir why some of your temples are very famous and while temples like this which are equally important and steeped in heritage is not crowded and not well known. As usual I did not get answers but when I moved out of the temple a gentle breeze swept me like a peacock feather and the feeling I got was Shiva.

The priest contact number is 9976173524.

Koodalaiartoor:

This is a small village and to reach this, one has to cross Srimushnam and from there a drive for another 3-4 kms and a  left cut and a travel for another 3 kms will bring us to this temple.

I reached the place by around 2pm and it was closed. The temple is being renovated and the priest stays near by. He opened the temple for me and I was alone in the temple for 15 minutes. The lingam was huge and great to watch as well as worship.

Shiva came in front of Sundarar and asked him to worship him in this place. Some specialities of this temple is there are two Amman sannadhis. There is no worship for Navagraghas here( 9 planets)

Three rivers join here.Manimutharu and Vellaru from earth join with river Saraswathi from heaven.

The contact number of the priest is 9786734652

Rajagopuram of Koodalaiartoor temple

It was an excellent day and I also visited Srimushnam but the temple was closed.
It is important to have the mobile numbers of priests of Koodalaiartoor and Rajendirapattinam.
Hence I have mentioned them in the blog. Priests of these two temples stay near by.
Other temples open between 6-1pm and from 4-8 pm.
From Pondicherry all these 5 temples can be visited in half a days time.By 4 pm I was at home for my evening coffee.

Peralam and Poonthotam based Sivasthalangal

It was a Friday and my hectic work had taken its toll on my mind and body. The body is dictated by mind and whenever my mind is overwhelmed my body often wilts. I decided to take a break from the hectic schedule.Reading the legends of temples and its importance then seeing them and coming back and visualizing  these unbelievable temples makes my mind serene and fresh.
We select a place and try to see temples connected to this place. Peralam, usually a unheard and unnoticed place is actually a town of utmost importance because 9 siva temples of great magnitude and splendour are connected to this holy place.
Lots of people go to Bangkok ,Singapore etc just for the sake of going.Momentary relaxation is what we get when we see these places. But a visit to our own places of worship reminds us about the rich heritage and culture we Tamilians have.I honestly feel our rich culture and heritage is fabulous and it has been downsized by our self centered politicians.
My brother's son Kumaran an engineering student who has developed keen interest  in mythology and history along with my ever reliable attender who is like my brother embarked on a one day trip towards Peralam. After finishing a personal work at Karaikal we reached a place called Peralam which is 24 Kms from Karaikal. On the way one can see Thirunallar a famous temple which needs no introduction.

LALITHAMBIGAI TEMPLE:

Peralam can be accessed from Mayiladuthurai for people who come from Chennai.Peralam is around 30 kms from Mayiladudurai. We had made a little ground work about the visit and we first stopped at a temple called Lalithambigai temple which is at Thirumeyachur,a two km drive from Peralam..This  place is on the route from Peralam to Thiruvarur. As soon as  you cross Peralam there will be a right cut  with a sign board showing the direction to the temple.A three km drive will take you to this historically important temple.
This temple has many specialties.
The origin of Lalitha sagasranamam supposedly came from this temple.
The interesting story goes like this. Two children Arunan and Garudan were born out of eggs given by the lord to a devout parent. One child Arunan took the form of Mohini.Sun god was tempted by the beauty of Mohini and molested her. Mohini @Arunan went and pleaded to Siva who cursed Suryan to become dark.Because of this, the world turned dark.To regain the lost glory god asked him to pray at Thirumeyachur for 7 months. He did as suggested but he did not get his original colour. He started screaming.Parvathi got disturbed by his screamings and was about to curse him.Siva calms Parvathi and as she calms down,Vasini also called Devathais came from the mouth of Lalithambigai. They sung thousand and eight names of the goddess Lalithambigai.
This was told by Haygrever who is the incarnation of Vishnu to Sage Agasthiyar.

The Miracle:
A recent miracle which was supposedly happened here is Lalithambigai had come in the dreams of a devotee from Bangalore and asked her to put Kolusu for her feet. The pious devotee  searched for a place where goddess did not have Kolusu(anklet). When she found that at this temple goddess did not have Kolusu she asked the priest that she wants to gift Kolusu to the goddess. But the priests said that there is no place in the feet of goddess to wear the Kolusu. Disappointed she went back to Bangalore.Once again the goddess came in her dream and said there is hole in her feet to put the Kolusu. She came back and requested the priest to check whether a hole is actually present in the feet of the goddess. There was one and the devotee was able to do what goddess had ordered. This event apparently happened in 1999.

In the temple there is also Ilankovil which means we will see two padal petra sthalams.Usually the Ilankoil is destroyed after the Perunkoil is built but here it is still present.
There is also a statue with Siva and  Parvathi standing together with Siva calming the goddess.
We finished seeing the temple by around 5.10 pm and from there we went to a place called Thirupampuram which is 6 kms from Lalithambigai temple.Actually lalithambigai and Thirupampuram temples attract  good number of devotees.

Kumaran and Annamalai standing in front of Lalithambigai temple

 THIRUPAMPURAM:

Thirupampuram is famous because Raaghu and Kethu are present together. The temple has close association with snakes and hence the Sivan here is called as Pampuranathar. No body dies of snake bite here and the story of this temple is as follows. Once Lord Vinayagar was offering prayers to Lord Shiva. At that time the serpent in the neck of the Lord thought that he too is worshipped by Vinayagar. Knowing this Lord Shiva got angry and cursed the serpents to lose all their Shakthi. In order to retrieve it Aadiseshan and other serpents came to earth in one Maha Shiva Rathri and offered prayers to Kudanthai Nageshwarar in the morning, Thirunageshwaram at the noon, Thirupamburam Pambureswarar in the evening and Nagoor Nageshwarar at the night and got the blessings of the Lord. The temple history suggests that snakes are present at this temple and every Sunday, Tuesday and Friday odors of Jasmine and Thazampu are also present. From Thirupampuram, Sirukudi is at a distance of three km. Its a very small temple and Archagar stays near the temple which is an advantage. A old and nice man.

At Sattanathar shrine,Thirupampram, other places where Sattanathar is present are Sirkazhi and
Thalaignairu. From this small hillock one can see the Gopuram of Thiruveezhimizhalai.

 SIRUKUDI:

The lord is called as Sutchumunathar or Mangaleshwarar.Siva disappeared from Parvathi playfully. Parvathi came looking for him. She took bath in a pond at this place and took some mud and made a small lingam and for worship.Hence the place is called Sirukudi.Tuesday or Agangaran also had some curse which was rectified at this place.

 THIRUVEEZHIMIZHALAI:

A seven Km drive through a narrow path from this place will bring you to a beautiful and archaeologically important temple called Thiruvizhimizhalai.
In olden days this place was full of a plant by name Villi plant from which this place got its name.
Another legend says sandal wood, jack fruit and villi plant all together were called as Veezhi and hence the name.
How to explain Mizhalai then?. A  person by name Mizhalai Kurumbar who lived in this place used to offer jack fruit for Shiva daily.Shiva was impressed by his piousness  and gave darshan to Mizhalai Kurumbar and hence the name Thiru veezhi mizhalai.
Another legend connected to this place is lord Vishnu once prayed to Shiva to regain his lost chakram from a demon who had stolen it. Shiva asked Vishnu to pray from a place where there was lots of Villli trees.Vishnu found this place and offered 1000 lotuses for Shiva. After offering 999 he could not find one more. To compensate for the same he offered his eye, which is still present in God's feet.
In this place there are two places where god has given Padi kasu in gold form for Sambandar and Thirunavukarasar, to circumvent the famine which had gripped this place in olden times.
Shiva here is called as Mappilai Sami and if unmarried guys pray here, their marraige will get fixed.
Temple as such is huge and has stunning looks.People who love architecture will find this place a treasure trove.

The altar where Thirunavukarasar got Padikasu from God for the poor affected by famine.

SITHALAPATHI@THILATHARPANAPURI@NARAMUGA or ADHIVINAYAGAR TEMPLE:

A place called Anniyur is near Thiruuveezhimizhalai temple but we did not go. Instead we went towards Sithalapathi which is around 9Kms from Thiruveezhimizhalai en route towards Poonthottam. Half a km from Koothanur Saraswathi temple a left cut and another half a km drive will take you to this place.

Before going into the legend of this place let me just brief about Pithru dosham or Thiladharpanam. Pithru dosham occurs if some one  has  not paid rituals for their dead parents.
Pithru dosha, also occurs if our ancestors had died after commiting lots of sins and if they had died without fullfilment of  their desires.
The rituals are usually done on Amavasai days.

It is at this sacred place Rama did Pithru dosham for his father Dasartha raja. When Rama did the ritual with four rice balls for his father all the balls turned into  worms. To rectify the same Rama asked fror Shiva's advise who advised him to take bath at Araasalur river and do the ritual at this place .When Rama did as suggested by Shiva the rice balls turned into 4 lingams.
Hence this place is considered an importnant place for people who want to do Pithru dosham.
Dasaratha achieved Moksham because of the rituals Rama did and the belief is the same will occur if a son does the same for his father at this place.
Kasi,Rameshwaram,Srivanjium,Thirivenisangamam,Sithalaathy or Thilatharapanapuri,Thiruvengadu and Gaya are other places where  Pithru thosham can be done.
Also at this place Vinayaga had a human face and the vinayaga is callled Naramuga vinayagar or Adhi vinayagar.
I never knew  this temple is so important and was very happy and grateful god bought us to this great shrine.

Vinayagar with the face of a man.

AMBAR PERUNKOVIL:

We reached Poonthotam at 8.00 pm, a 6 km drive from Peralam and took a right turn towards Karaikal route. A 4 km drive brings you to Ambar Perunkovil.
A very old and huge temple.
It is one of 78 Mada kovils. The legend of this temple is Brahma was converted to a bird and when he prayed to Shiva,Shiva converted him to Brahma again. hence this temple is called as Brahmapuri.
Very near to this temple there is Ambar makalam but by the time we went there it was closed. There is always next time.
Before I wind up I want to share the knowledge of the meaning of  Mada Kovil. There are around 70 Madakovils and almost all of them have been built by Kochengatocholan in second century AD.
In those years Madakovil were built with elevated structure which could not be accessed by elephants.
Kochengatocholan is called so because he had red eyes, the break up being Ko - King. Chengato - Red eye.It just means Red Eyed King. He had red eyes because he was in mothers womb for more than ten months.

From Peralam - Thirumeyachur- Ilankoil- Thirupampuram - Sirukudi - Thiruveezhimizhalai-Anniur - Sithalapathi - Koothanur Saraswathi - Ambar- Ambar makalam ,can be easily covered. It has to be covered exactly in the order which I have mentioned.

All these temples are open from 6am and close by 1 pm.They reopen by 4 pm and close by 8-30 pm.
